While in Afghanistan, LaFontaine was referred to the Eastern Kentucky University Small Business Development Center. Michael Rodriguez, Director of the Center and John Preston, Management Consultant were able to assist through e-mail the basics of starting an academic based pre-kindergarten school and made the necessary contacts with the Eastern Kentucky Child Care Coalition for regulations and licensure information. Upon returning in February of 2011, LaFontaine began looking for a location and working out most of the details and tasks in order to get his business up and running.

LaFontaine Preparatory School is a structured program for four-year-old learners with a top-notch curriculum and a vision to give children a solid foundation to draw upon as they move into kindergarten and beyond. The goal of the school is to deliver a diverse experience in the arts. Classes start September 6, 2011. To learn more about the school, visit the school’s website at www.lafontaineprep.org or call (859) 582-9405.

Karen and Norris Kennedy first approached the Hopkinsville SBDC in March 2009 with a problem – they could not find any good hot wings in the area. Norris, who is currently on active duty at Fort Campbell, wanted to remedy this problem by obtaining the local franchise for Buffalo Wings and Rings.

Together the Kennedy’s and the SBDC developed a business plan, met with local bankers and representatives of the franchise, and prepared a SBA loan package. The couple was later awarded a SBA 7A loan for $488,500 and injected $80,000 of their own money into the project.

On September 13, 2010 the Kennedy’s proudly opened Buffalo Wings and Rings and set franchise records for total sales for opening day and opening week of the franchise.

In addition to bringing good wings to the area, the Kennedy’s business venture has added approximately 45 new jobs to the local economy. There are plans to add an additional five in the coming months.

Initially Simon was unsure of what type of business to pursue but knew that he had the drive and dedication to be successful.

Simon drew upon his past experiences as a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps, serving from 1999 to 2004 in Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom, to determine what type of business to start. After careful consideration, Simon and his family decided to start a DTG printing and graphic design business, building upon repeat customers for growth.

Realizing the need for financing and a business plan, Simon sought the services of Michael Rodriguez with the Eastern Kentucky University SBDC. Together, Simon and Rodriguez developed a business plan and financial projections. Rodriguez guided Simon in leasing property for his business, and using the Simons personal savings to purchase equipment.

It was important to the Simon family that their business produce an eco-friendly product that reinforced their commitment to the environment and community.

The DTG printing process provided just this. DTG printing produces images with amazing sharpness and brilliance that are highly colorfast and soft to the touch. The water-based ink is non-toxic, lead free, does not contain any heavy metals, and is safe for children’s clothing. DTG printing technology also allows printing in more 16 million colors.

Semper Simon opened for business in October 2010. Today, Semper Simon can print on just about anything that is flat. Their products range from t-shirts, mouse pads, tote bags, pillowcases, sports jerseys, socks and more.

In addition, Semper Simon offers graphic design services to assist with individualized logos. Once the design has been created, a copy is kept on file for future printing needs and the customer keeps the logo.

Oftentimes, the leadership and planning skills gained in the military provide an excellent foundation for business ownership. Combine that with a strong family work ethic, and you have a winning formula. Jerome and Sharon Bussey, both serving on active duty, had the goal of owning a business that they could develop and grow with their sons. They recognized a need for affordable shipping options for the general public and business community near Fort Knox. After researching franchise opportunities, the decision was made to purchase a Goin’ Postal franchise.

When they approached a banker for financing, he encouraged them to meet with the UK SBDC in Elizabethtown. There, a consultant worked with them to outline goals for the business, develop a business management plan and create a time line for implementation. She provided guidance in negotiating lease terms, cash flow management and effective marketing to the government. With assistance from the UK SBDC, the Busseys submitted a complete package to their bank and were approved for an SBA loan to purchase the franchise and start their business.

It’s definitely a family business.
